Glycolic Acid Treatment
It has been stated that prevention and correction are the two sides of the anti-aging coin. Most clients already know that sun is the ultimate skin abuser and as a result most are remembering to apply sunscreen, but for those seeking simple solutions to unwanted wrinkles, hope is finally on the horizon. Enter alpha-hydroxy acids.
Preliminary studies suggest that alpha-hydoxy acids will give Retin-A clear run for the anti-aging money. It is less to irritate the skin or increase phtosensitivity which are the two negative features to Retin-A.
Until recently alpha-hydroxy acids were available only by prescription. In addition to treating acne and extremely dry skin, it has been found to diminish the appearance of fine wrinkles and even-out blotchy skin tone.
Alpha-hydroxy acids have been found to have beneficial effects on the outer layers of the skin. These acids occur naturally in food. Citric (citrus fruit), lactic (sour milk), tartaric (wine) are some of the better known acids. But it is glycolic acid, a natural source from sugar cane, which has become the premier treatment for photoaged skin. It works best in cosmetic preparations because of its small molecular size.
Glycolic acid is an exfoliating agent which sloughs off dry, rough outer layers, leaving an overall smoother texture. It is the best known treatment to slough away the outer most layer of the skin. Fine wrinkles appear to diminish with repeated applications and, according to Eugene Van Scott, M.D., who is one of the leading investigators of the AHA's, the skin appears younger looking.
When glycolic acid is paired with hydroquinone (Hydro-Q Fade Formula), it acts as a more effective bleaching agent.
Suggested treatment: Weekly
Note: The glycolic acid treatment must be followed by the application of a facial moisturizer.
